The cause of vitiligo is not fully understood, but is thought to have an autoimmune and genetic component

Approximately 1-2% of people are affected by vitiligo, affecting people of all races and ages

Patients with vitiligo are at increased risk for developing other autoimmune disorders, particularly thyroid conditions.
