Keratosis Pilaris/ "Rough Skin"

Keratosis Pilaris, or "KP":

  • Keratosis pilaris is a common, harmless skin condition resembling "goose bumps"

  • "KP" is often considered a cousin of eczema

  • More common in children

  • There is no cure

 

 

Signs and symptoms

  • Keratosis Pilaris causes tiny bumps, mostly on the upper arms and thighs

  • It occasionally involves the cheeks or trunk

  • The bumps usually don't hurt or itch

  • Dry, rough skin in the areas with bumps

  • Worsens with cold, dry weather

  • Sandpaper-like bumps resembling "goose bumps"

 

Prevention:

  • Avoid fragrances and preservatives in personal care products

  • Limiting fabric softener use

  • Avoid bubble baths

  • Use a non-soap hypo-allergenic cleanser, like:

    • ​Dove® Sensitive Skin Unscented Beauty Bar

    • CeraVe™ Hydrating Cleanser

    • Cetaphil® Gentle Cleansing Bar

  • Use a loofah on affected areas once per week

 

Treatments:

  • Amlactin /Lac-hydrin or any moisturizer with 12% lactic acid 

  • Urea 40% cream
