Diagnostis:

  • Blood tests may be necessary:

    • Complete Blood Count (Anemia and estimating folic acid and B12 levels)

    • Iron studies

    • Folic acid

    • Vitamin B12

    • Comprehensive Metabollic Panel (liver or kidney problems, diabetes)

    • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

    • Male hormones (Testosterone and DHEAS)

    • Female hormones (FSH, LH, estrogen, prolactin, sex hormone binding globulin, androstenedione)

    • RPR (syphillis)

    • ESR/ANA (inflammation or an autoimmune condition such as lupus)

  • Skin biopsy is occasionally necessary

  • Skin/scalp cultures can be taken
