What is PRP/Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Restoration?

​

  • A small amount of blood is drawn from a vein in your arm or hand

  • The blood is placed into a centrifuge, which is a machine that spins your blood

  • Your blood is separated into a red section and a yellow section.  The red section contains your red blood cells.  The yellow section is called Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP for short.

  • The Platelet Rich Plasma is injected into your scalp.

  • The Platelet Rich Plasma can release/increase growth factors thought to cause increased hair growth

How does PRP/Platelet Rich Plasma work?
​

PRP/Platelet Rich Plasma contains multiple growth factors.  These growth factors are thought to stimulate inactive hair follicles into an active growth factors.  These growth factors include:

 

  • platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)

  • transforming growth factor (TGF)

  • platelet factor interleukin (IL)

  • platelet-derived angiogenesis factor (PDAF)

  • vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF)

  • fibronectin

How much blood is removed?
 

Typically 24-32 milliliters or cc of blood is removed (in comparison, a blood donation is 500 cc of blood)

Are the injections painful?
 

We use 30 gauge needles (pediatric sized)

In addition, your scalp can be anesthetized use several different methods.  A scalp nerve block can be performed by injecting lidocaine into four areas that supply most of the sensation to the scalp.

Or lidocaine can be used to directly numb the scalp itself.

After your sensation in your scalp has decreased, the PRP is injected into any area with decreased hair density.

What results can I expect?
​

The results of PRP/Platelet Rich Plasma Individual may vary. More clinical studies are needed, especially for long term results.  PRP is not a “cure” for hair loss, and no guarantees can be made.  Since PRP is not a "drug", it is not FDA-approved at this point in time, and its use for hair loss is considered "off-label."

Is there a risk of allergic reaction?
 
As PRP is processed from your own blood, there is minimal risk of allergy or rejection with this treatment.
However the processing of the blood involves putting it into a tube which has a small amount of latex.  The amount of latex exposure is similar to when receiving a vaccine, or numbing medication during a simple procedure.  Patients with severe latex allergies may need to be pretreated with antihistamines.

Who should not receive PRP?
​

If you have an active scalp infection, scalp skin cancer, scarring alopecia (scarring and hair loss), or any type of blood or platelet disorder, you should not receive PRP.  Patients with severe latex allergies may need to be pretreated with an antihistamine.

What are the alternatives to PRP Hair Restoration?

How many treatments will I need?
​

Most patients see best results if they receive at least two treatments spaced 2-3 months apart.  Since the long term results are unknown, patients may need periodic treatments in the future (most likely every six months).
